Master’s in engineering management and MBA degrees are designed with different students in mind.
- MEM students usually have a background in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) and may have work experience in engineering roles.
- An MBA serves a broader audience and doesn’t require technical expertise, students can come from a wide range of professional backgrounds
While both degrees typically include studies in core business areas such as finance, data analytics and supply chain management, there are general differences in the coursework as well:
MEM Coursework
- Engineering management coursework is designed to fit the unique engineering environment.
- In industries that require engineering expertise, leaders must understand project management, supply chain operations and other essential business principles to successfully manage complex technical projects.
- This focus on the intersection of engineering and business management prepares students for leadership roles requiring technical and management skills.
MBA Coursework
- Traditional MBA coursework has a broad scope that covers advanced business knowledge in a more generalized way.
- Graduates can apply concepts like business analytics, leadership, entrepreneurship and global business to a variety of industries and career paths.
- While many MBA programs offer specializations related to specific fields, the degree of technical knowledge and skill set required differs from that of an engineering management curriculum.
